Solana · nocturnal · not a mouse

The rat who rides at night.

Matt Furie's wordless 2012 book The Night Riders. A frog, a dirt bike, and the little guy riding behind him. Furie drew him from his own pet rat. Everyone still calls him a mouse.

The lore

Before the frog, there was the rat.

Furie published The Night Riders with McMullens, McSweeney's children's imprint, in 2012. Hand-drawn, foil-stamped, and completely wordless — the whole story told in pictures. The cover folds out into a double-sided poster.

He's a rat, drawn from life.

Furie has said the frog's little buddy is a rat, that many readers will assume he's a mouse, that rats are the smarter animal, and that the character came from his own pet rat. Paraphrased — Furie interview, The Beat, 2012

Why he works. Every good meme is a small injustice. He's been in the canon since 2012 and still gets called a mouse.

Why Solana. The book happens in one night, at speed, in the dark. It fits.
